I have grown up seeing my mother and aunts making custard on various occasions. Both my elder sister and I, absolutely love the dish and that is why we can’t imagine a single celebration without this marvelous dessert.

The Simplicity, Creamy-Richness, and Limited Ingredients requirement actually highlights the dish even more.

I can recall an incident from my childhood; we used to visit one of our aunt’s home on occasion just to have custard. Her custard was quite popular then among relatives and friends.

So today, I have recreated my aunt’s custard dish with some of my personal touches in it. Don’t you want to taste the royalty, that this dessert offers??

‘Custard or Pudding’ which one do you prefer the most??

Custard and Pudding are similar kinds of dishes but not the same ones.

Though the base for both dishes is almost identical, these desserts certainly have some dissimilarities.

Custard is a popular dessert from the 14th century that is mainly made with milk, cream, sugar, and Eggs. On the other hand, the ingredients to make pudding are milk, cream, sugar, and Corn Starch.

So the basic difference between Pudding and Custard is that the thickening agent for pudding is corn starch, whereas custard gets thick because of the eggs.

Another basic difference between these two items is – in terms of texture, the custard is heavier and firmer than the pudding.

Don’t you want to utilize your leftover custard??

No doubt custard is one of the tastiest dessert dishes. Whenever it is prepared at my home, I make sure not a single spoon of custard gets wasted.

By incorporating custard with other food items, you can actually create new desserts.

Who doesn’t like custard cakes?

You just have to submerge some sponge cake slices in the leftover custard, let those pieces suck the custard and your instant custard cake is ready to enjoy.

Bored with plain custard taste? Add some fresh fruit pieces with leftover custard and you have just made a new dish, fruit custard.

Leftover custard can also be used as the filling of your shoe pastries.

Is it possible to make Vegan or Dairy-free custard? What about the taste of vegan custard?

The thickness of custard comes from eggs and the creamy richness comes from using evaporated milk as well as condensed milk.

But I have a quick solution for vegan followers. Use eggless instant custard powder to make the dish. Instead of dairy milk, use soya, cashew, or almond milk.

Just mix 6 tablespoons of eggless custard power with ½ Cup of cold liquid dairy-free milk.

Then pour this mixture along with sugar and vanilla essence into 4 cups of full cream soya, cashew, or almond milk.

Cook it until the mixture gets thick in consistency, you have just made dairy-free vegan custard within less than 10 minutes.

Use a good quality eggless custard power to keep the authentic taste intact.

Want to serve your custard with perfection?

I am really into serving dishes with perfection. Because what doesn’t look good, most of the time doesn’t taste good as well.

Instead of serving a complete custard dish in one large bowl, serve it in small bowls or wine glasses like the “vintage” and “Chardonnay” ones. As we all know “less is more”, decorate the surface with only one or two kinds of toppings.

Besides most of the time the color of custard turns yellow, so try to use pomegranate seeds or blueberries and green grapes (for that hint of green color) as toppings. These bright colors will complement the yellow color of custard in the background.

To intensify the taste, serve the dish when it is properly chilled.

How to Make Fruit Custard

  1. First of all, we have to prepare our milk. This step is very crucial because one little mistake can ruin the whole dish. So, take 6 cups of regular liquid milk in a large saucepan or milk pot. Cook it on slow to medium heat until 6 cups of milk become 4 cups of thick milk. During this process, stir the milk with a spoon or spatula occasionally. When the milk reduces to 4 cups of evaporated milk, turn off the heat and let it cools down completely. You can actually avoid this whole milk-reducing process and simply use store-bought evaporated or full cream milk to make this custard.
  2. Let’s prepare the custard powder mixture. Take a bowl and add 5 tablespoons of readymade custard powder in it. Now add ½ Cup of cold regular milk it the powder. Give a good mix, and make sure no lump has left. Keep aside for later use.
  3. Now take 2 egg yolks in another bowl. Whisk those yolks properly with the help of a fork.
  4. Here comes the main (assembling) part. Take that large pot of milk and one by one add sugar, condensed milk, and vanilla essence in it. Stir the milk until the sugar dissolves. Now add the custard powder and egg yolk mixtures. Mix properly.
  5. As all the ingredients and mixtures are added to the milk, place the pot on the stove and turn on the heat. Keep the heat at low to medium temperature. Stir that milk mixture continuously. Don’t allow to form any lump or to stick the mixture on the bottom of the pot.
  6. Cook the mixture until it becomes thick. When you are satisfied with the consistency of your custard, turn off the heat and remove the pot immediately from the stove.
  7. Let the custard cools down a little bit and then transfer it to serving bowls or glasses. Keep those bowls or glasses in the refrigerator for 1/2 hour or until completely get chilled.
  8. Then decorate that chilled custard with different toppings before serving and enjoy the deliciousness with your family and friends.
